This is a sample of Infiltration/Inflow. Infiltration is groundwater that enters the sanitary sewer system. This was found during a study that was performed by Fay, Spofford & Thorndike. The
clear water that is seen is groundwater that is entering the manhole around the pipe.
This is one process that was used to prevent groundwater from entering manholes. The manhole was pressure washed and then grout was applied to the leaking joints.
This process which is an epoxy coating, was used due to the degradation of the concrete from hydrogen sulfide that is formed by the wastewater in the sewer system.
